Label Text: Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931 and in the following year set up the puppet state of Manchukuo. For Japan, Manchuria was the new frontier, with wide-open spaces and abundant resources. The government built up carefully planned cities and settled them with families recruited to realize Japan’s colonialist goals. In 1940 a mass wedding ceremony was held at Nogi Shrine in Tokyo before the couples departed for the continent with the hope that they would raise families and transform the region into a full-fledged colony.
