The term “Ginbura” is colloquial Japanese for “strolling around Ginza,” and implies an almost aimless exploration, not unlike the Parisian wanderer, or flaneur. The origin of the term, however, is uncertain, though some suggest it comes from “Burajiru,” or “Brazil,” a reference to the imported South American coffee that attracted university students to the area. To this day, a weekend “ginbura” remains a popular pastime for residents of Tokyo, who still flock to the area to see the sites, browse the department store displays, and, perhaps most important, to be seen doing so.
