Since the late nineteenth century, the Shinbashi Bridge has been an important landmark in Tokyo. Located at the southern edge of Ginza, it was the final stop of the first Japanese railway, constructed in 1872. While the composition of this design consciously references Japanese tradition—bridge-crossing scenes were a hallmark of ukiyo-e of the late Edo period—the thick concrete of the bridge and its electric lights are new innovations, symbolic of a constantly renewing metropolis.
