With this design, Oda highlights one of the most visible changes to Ginza’s main streets: the emergence of large, European-style department stores, many of which still stand today.

By placing the young girl and her dolls in front of the manufactured tea set and electric lamp in the department store’s windows, Oda has positioned the viewer in the role of a shopper or stroller. The girl, her face harshly illuminated in a manner reminiscent of Bonnard, looks out of the frame, reminding us that to experience Ginza meant more than seeing its new modern marvels; it also meant being seen.
