Label Text:
In 1961, French began a series of sketches that deviated drastically from his former highly-ordered, rigid figurative aesthetic. His sketches from the 1960s, in contrast, contain often rather grotesque biomorphic forms. At first glance they appear to be rocks, and at second glance, living organisms--to varying degrees humanoid. Although they look very different, these compositions engage the same themes of sexuality and the psyche, perhaps denoting a deeper layer of the unconscious--where Jung imagined the "birth place of spiritual, inner and complete man."
