EEB (Sep. 2011): When the Mead acquired this tangka in 2010, the subject was tentatively identified as Lobsang Yeshe (1663–1737), the Fifth Panchen Lama—the highest ranking lama ("without superior"), or highly attained master of the Dharma, after the Dalai Lama ("great ocean [of knowledge] teacher") in Tibetan Buddhism’s reformed Gelug (or Geluk) order. Subsequently identified as Losang Kalsang Gyatso (1708–1757), the Seventh Dalai Lama, at the time of his initiation, the subject of this tangka was authoritatively identified in November 2011 by Prof. Marylin Rhie as the Third Panchen Lama, Losang Penden Yeshe (1738–1780), shown with his teacher, the Seventh Dalai Lama, Losang Kelsang Gyatso (1708–1757). Tashilhunpo Monastery, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, appears at the upper center. The style of painting belongs to the New Menri tradition, founded in the seventeenth century by Choying Gyatso (ca. 1615–1685).
