Kudan was the name given to a steep incline to the north of Edo Castle. It afforded a view of the city and Tokyo Bay beyond, and so, in 1871, a lighthouse was constructed on the grounds of the Shōkonsha (later renamed Yasukuni Shrine), to serve as a navigational aid for ships. It was later moved off the shrine grounds to the opposite side of Uchibori-dori, as depicted by Kawakami. The great torii (gate) marking the entrance to the shrine was constructed in 1921 and was one of the meisho of the modern city. It was taken down in 1943 and rebuilt in 1974.
