The National Sports Arena, the location of the three of the six yearly sumo tournaments held in Tokyo, was one of the few structures in the Honjo district, on the east bank of the Sumida River, to survive the earthquake relatively undamaged. Koizumi depicts the spring tournament of 1935. To the left of the entrance, two men read about the upcoming bouts. A huge wrestler walks past the ticket booth, and a policeman stands guard.
