Description: series 10/10
Label Text: This image is a still from Passage, a 30-minute color video accompanied by music composed by Philip Glass. The video is a meditation on the universal experience of death and the ritual of burial. Shoja Azari, a frequent collaborator of Neshat's, describes Passage as "an eloquent visual poem that symbolically tells the story of human loss, grief, tradition, renewal, and hope in the face of existential wondering, awe, and mystery."
This photograph represents one of three key narrative elements in the film--a group of women in black veils vigorously digging a burial site with their bare hands in a vast desert.
