As a student, H. Corbin Kidder, Class of 1828, planned to become an artist and painted portraits of Amherst College President Heman Humphrey (president 1823–1845) and several classmates. After college, Kidder went to theological school and became a clergyman. The Pendleton firm of Boston, the first successful lithographic firm in the United States, printed Kidder’s drawing, as well as many other college and town views. The lithograph also appeared with a printed text providing a history of the college from its founding in 1821 and noting that the building on the left was under construction. The view, with its descriptive text, could have served as an attractive advertisement for the fledgling institution and the charming town, situated in “a region distinguished for the beauty of its scenery.”
