This impression differs slightly from other versions of the design (see Boston MFA acc. no. RES.51.133) and is known as the "pre-earthquake" version, referring to the Great Kantō Earthquake of 1923, during which most of publisher Watanabe Shōzaburō's stock of woodblocks was destroyed, requiring some of his stable of artists, like Shotei, to create the designs anew. - BB 11/06/2013
