Description: aiban yoko-e; nishiki-e; fūkeiga; "Gyōsho Tōkaidō"
Label Text: This print is signed "Hiroshige ga" ('drawn by Hiroshige') at upper-left. The titles of this design and of the series are printed at upper-right, against the sky and within the red cartouche, respectively. The seal of the censor Hama Yahei is visible at lower-right in the water and has been used as the basis for dating. This impression bears no publisher's mark and has been dated based on comparison with other examples. This series, colloquially known as the "Gyōsho Tōkaidō," (literally the "semi-cursive Tōkaidō," for the calligraphic style in which the series title is written), was published by Ezakiya Kichibei of the firm Tenjudō from ca. 1841–1844. It was also published concurrently by Ezakiya Tatsuzō of the firm Etatsu. However, in the known examples issued by the latter, the publisher's mark has been placed on the hull of the left boat (see Boston MFA acc. no. 21.9338). In addition, in that impression the bokashi gradient effect in the sky is yellow, not blue. This series was also re-issued in the early 1850s by Yamadaya Shōbei of the firm Yamashō.
