Description: single panel of a vertical ōban triptych; yakusha-e; nishiki-e
Label Text: The actor Kawarazaki Gonjurō I performed the role of Tekomai Masukichi in the ninth lunar month of 1859, when this play made it's premiere in Edo. Now more commonly known as Ryūsei, this kabuki play by Kawatake Mokuami is a humorous and ribald tale of the exploits of the gods centered around a marital dispute of the god and goddess of thunder, and includes a famous dance performed by a shooting star.
This print is signed "Toyokuni ga" ('drawn by Toyokuni') at lower-right within the red toshidama cartouche. To the right of the cartouche is the circular combined date-aratame seal of the censor, indicating that this print was inspected and approved the tenth lunar month of 1859 (Ansei 6), only a month after the play's premiere. Below the censor's mark is the seal of publisher Izutsuya Shōkichi, who published many series and unserialized prints by Kunisada. The role played by Kawarazaki is identified within the red cartouche at middle-right. - BB, 2013
