Description: sōsaku-hanga
Label Text: This print is signed at lower-middle "U. Azechi" and is dated at lower-left "-55." At lower-right is printed "71/100" indicating that 100 impressions were made, of which this is number 71. The small red circular form at lower-right is the artist's seal. A self-taught printmaker, Azechi initially specialized in cityscapes, reflecting the influence of Hiratsuka Un'ichi. However, following World War II, the artist turned to moutains and mountaineers as his primary subjects and developed a very individual style that emphasized flat planes of color and simplified shapes. He was also known for his many essays on subjects related to mountains.
