Description: one panel of a Kabuki triptych; ō-ban
Label Text: The signature, lower-right, reads 'Gototei Kunisada ga,' or "Drawn by Gototei Kunisada." Near the lower-left corner is the publisher's seal for Matsumura Tatsuemon, though owing to condition and an apparent cropping of the print's original margins, it is somewhat obscured. The actor, Iwai Kumeisaburō's 'mon,' or actor's crest, has wittily been transposed from its usual location — the robe of the performer, often on one or both shoulders — to the end of the geisha Oshūn's hairpin, perhaps in parallel to the male actor's transformation into a female role.
Another copy of this print is held in the Theatre Museum, Waseda University, Tokyo (acc. no. 002-0094, group no. 101-3473).
