His horse is led by Haman, who is wearing a turban, gestures with his hand, and appears angry. The surrounding crowd is filled with variously dressed onlookers kneeling, bowing, saluting, and discussing among themselves. Dogs and children sit in front of the crowd, and some youth climb up the walls. A baby is carried on someone’s back. The scene is set in a city, with a stone archway framing the central figures and a large and ornate domed building beyond it. Watching from a stone balcony are King Ahasueras and Queen Esther, elaborately dressed and seemingly sketched by Rembrandt as a self-portrait of himself and his wife.
