Label Text: As a graphic designer and artist, Yokoo employs the pop-art strategy of appropriation to highlight the ubiquity of commercialization and westernization of modern-day Japan. At first glance, the work appears to be a poster for a science fiction film. Yet, on closer inspection, the combination of images—from fighting Japanese warriors and the blood-red sea, to burning lotuses and a smiling Marilyn Monroe enshrined at the center—serve as a comment on modern culture. This criticism is highlighted by the Eye of Providence, pictured above center, looking away from what unfolds beneath.
