Label Text: Roaming the streets of Paris with his camera, Atget attempted to systematically record the minutiae of "Old Paris." Over a period of thirty years, Atget created nearly 10,000 images of Paris, earning a living from sales to city officials, architects, and decorators. His subjects included streets, storefronts, interiors, and architectural details. Though Atget perceived his photographs as documents, later artists admire his work for poetic statements on the experience of the modern city. In this photograph of a Renaissance mansion staircase, Atget evokes the mood of the place through the skillful use of light and shadow.
