Label Text: The eye of the spectator might not immediately distinguish the cannons in this composition, for they seem to be part of the city organism—the unstoppable, fateful pagan force of a rebellious machine. The image conveys a battle of machines, which led to the First World War’s cruelty. Yet instead of actual contemporary weapons, which she possibly had not seen, Rozanova depicts traditional cannons, which in most people’s minds still dominated the concept of war. Her war-torn city becomes an iron mousetrap for its human inhabitants. BJ, 2014
