Label Text:
Born in Estonia, Aleksandr Kalugin spent most of his life in Moscow, where he studied under Vladimir Veisberg and Boris Kozlov. In the Soviet era, he was repeatedly arrested and placed in psychiatric facilities, both for his art and allegedly aggressive behaviour, especially towards policemen. The design for this etching was created in Butyrka Prison on December 8, 1982, when Kalugin learned about Leonid Brezhnev's death. His fellow inmates reportedly participated in the creation process, discussing and suggesting details to the artist.
