In 1854, Disdéri invented the carte-de-visite, a method by which the photographic plate of the camera is divided into eight parts allowing for eight separate exposures. A proof sheet like this one would be cut and each photograph would be mounted, to be left by the person portrayed as a "calling card." Disdéri's process essentially ended the older practice of the daguerreotype portrait
