Description: shunga
Label Text: This print is unsigned and bears no identifying marks. This print has been elsewhere identified as an Kitagawa Utamaro due to the fact that Eizan's depictions of women hew so closely to the master's style. However, this scene of a courtesan and her lover with a shamisen (a traditional Japanese musical instrument often played by women in the pleasure quarters of Edo) comes from an untitled series of 10 known prints by an unidentified publisher, all of which date to the period ca. 1809–1813.
For more information, see: Kondo, Eiko, "Eizan" (exh. cat.), Ukiyo-e Academy, Japan(1996): pl. 204–213, p. 88–89. (This print is pl. 210.)
