Born in Münster in 1605, Boeckhorst moved to Antwerp in the 1620s, where he studied painting under Peter Paul Rubens, whose Madonna and Child is shown nearby, and collaborated with Franz Snyders, whose Still Life is also displayed on this wall. Here, Boeckhorst depicts St. Sebastian, who was charged as a Christian by the Roman Emperor Diocletian, and tied to a tree and shot with arrows. (When St. Sebastian survived this torment, Diocletian later had him beaten to death.) The fall of light across the saint’s torso and the agitated drapery with its lines and angles are characteristic of Boeckhorst’s style. The transparent gray shadows and darkness around the face lend a sense of sadness to the scene.
