Description: from Harlem Document project
Label Text: The woman in this photograph sits with arms open and thumbs resting on torn fabric, as though she has a long habit of running her nails along the texture of the chair upholstery. Bare feet folded beneath her and head leaning back against the chair, she looks confident and tired. A twisting rope pull draws a line from her head to a wild fringed lamp, mask-like with cool shades.
Lady and Lamp is part of “Harlem Document,” a project directed by Siskind in collaboration with sociologist and Harlem resident Michael Carter. “Harlem Document” was designed to document living and working in Harlem, organized around the idea that documentary photography could be harnessed to effect social change
