Di Pietro was one of the most prolific and successful fifteenth-century Sienese painters, the head of a workshop that satisfied the demands of civic and religious institutions in the city as well as those for private devotion. In 1444 he created one of the key works of fifteenth-century Sienese painting: the large altarpiece for the Sienese order of the Gesuati, now in Siena’s Pinacoteca Nazionale. Along with works on a monumental scale, di Pietro produced numerous small panels, such as Madonna and Child. These works came in response to the religious needs of a wide audience, and particularly to the spiritual tendencies represented by the Gesuati and the Franciscan movement.
