Almost half-length portrait, three-quarters to left , looking left, against a background of a room interior: a pedestal behind with figure holding a scroll, an arch in the background, a decorated column at the right. He wears a broad brimmed hat on his long, straight hair, has a long crooked nose and wide mouth. Has collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. In his right hand he holds a scroll , his left rests on base decorated with floral design and double headed eagle. Beneath this, the inscription: Maximilianus DG Imp Semp August. Signed on scroll held by figure: Henricus/Honnius/fecit 1636/Hage-Comitris/Aetat 63.

This drawing is a copy of Lucas van Leyden's (ca.1494-1533) famous engraved and etched posthumous portrait of the Emperor from 1520. His memorial portrait itself is based upon Dürer's woodcut version of 1519. A great admirer of Dürer, they met at the Antwerp market where Lucas exchanged his entire oeuvre for eight guldens worth of Dürer's prints, a trade which would have included Lucas' Maximilian portrait. Unlike Dürer's spare, iconic version, Lucas has added the Emperor's accouterments of office and the grandiose architectural setting.
