Label Text: This drawing is a copy of Lucas van Leyden's (ca.1494-1533) famous engraved and etched posthumous portrait of the Emperor from 1520. His memorial portrait itself is based upon Dürer's woodcut version of 1519. A great admirer of Dürer, they met at the Antwerp market where Lucas exchanged his entire oeuvre for eight guldens worth of Dürer's prints, a trade which would have included Lucas' Maximilian portrait. Unlike Dürer's spare, iconic version, Lucas has added the Emperor's accouterments of office and the grandiose architectural setting.
