Born in Dorchester, Massachusetts, Frederick Childe Hassam had a long and industrious career. Studying in Paris from 1886 to 1889, he absorbed the tenets of French Impressionism, which he embraced along with his own response to the tradition of American landscape painting. Known for his staccato brushwork, resonant colors, and a remarkable facility for articulating light and atmosphere, Hassam depicted his favorite locales, including the bustling cities of Paris and New York, as well as the pastoral vistas of the New England countryside and its dazzling seacoast.

Early Spring in New York, with its verdant lawn and blooming fruit trees, captures that joyful sense of anticipation and wonder that accompanies a sunny spring day after a long winter.
