Label Text:
This is one of numerous variations of a popular bronze figure, which is currently associated with the workshop of the 16th-century Paduan sculptor Severo Calzetta da Ravenna. It represents Atlas, the Titan from Greek mythology who supported the celestial sphere on his shoulders. In this particular iteration, neither the globe not the foundation of the figure survive. Possibly produced in the 19th century, like other known examples, it must have been part of a utilitarian object that functioned as an inkwell or an oil lamp.

Subjects:
Bronze
