This fetching portrait by Edward Malbone, one of the most famous miniature painters of the early American Republic, depicts Charleston, South Carolina, native Sarah Reeve Ladson silhouetted against a cloudy sky. Malbone delineated Ladson’s youthful features using smooth, nearly indistinguishable brushstrokes and a limited palette, creating a breezy, natural effect. The sitter came from an elite family and, about three years after sitting for Malbone, married Baltimore art collector Robert Gilmor, Jr. As Mrs. Robert Gilmor, Jr., she would be portrayed by other major American artists, including Thomas Sully and Horatio Greenough (Gibbes Museum of Art, Charleston, South Carolina).
