Description: Framed wax portrait of Edwin Elisha Lewis by an unknown artist, possibly Johann Christian Rauschner, the rectangular frame is gilded with a cove molding and an inner decorative rope molding, the frame has been covered with a layer of radiator paint, the glass of the portrait has been reverse painted and is an oval in black with a gilt border, inside the frame is a wax portrait of a young man facing left, he has naturally curly brown hair and sideburns, a white cravat, blue suit coat with gold buttons, the wax portrait is on a cream-colored paper? ground, there are two original hanging rings at the top of the frame, on the reverse of the frame is a paper label with ink inscription, "Edwin Elisha Lewis/Born 1790 Died 1880/Greatgrand father of/ George Albert Lewis/ Made about 1815"; and a white modern paper label, "18/2-26-81/c. 1815" Edwin Lewis died in Oxford, New Haven County, Connecticut, in 1880. Condition: The glass is loose in the frame. Radiator paint covers the original gilding of the frame. Wax portrait possibly by John Christian Rauschner (b. 1760) Genealogy: Edwin Elisha Lewis (1790-1880) – his mother was Eunice Williams of Wethersfield, CT, who was the daughter of Elisha Williams of Wethersfield, who was the son of the Rev. Elisha Williams originally of Hatfield, MA and died in Wethersfield, who was the son of the Rev. William Williams of Hatfield, MA.
