Description:
English delft circular plate with edge to edge decoration in blue, which is written in pen on the back of the plate, "Delft wares belonging to Mrs. Hannah Locke, who was married 1753 Dec. 17." According to the donor, the plate's history of ownership was through a Locke marriage to the Moore family of Gill, Massachusetts; then to the Eddy family of Gill; and finally to the Frenchs. Records show Hannah Farnsworth (1734-1798) married James Locke, Jr. (1729-1808) of Townsend, Massachusetts, on Dec. 17, 1753 in Groton, MA. They had 15 children. Hannah and James Locke had a daughter Eunice Locke (1763-1838) Edward Richards, Sr. (1763-1853), their daughter Urania Barrett Richards (1794-1865) married Ira Stoughton (1794-1873) of Gill, Mass, their daughter Eunice Lucretia Stoughton (1823-1913) married John Lorenzo Shephardson Moore (1840-1907) of Gill, MA. The Moores had no children and the connection to the Eddy family is not currently known. The decoration is divided into four quadrants, the four lines meeting in the center well in the center of a series of seven expanding circles. Those circles are also intersected by another four lines meeting at the center, each with stylized leaves starting at the outermost circle. There are additional stylized leaves around the outer well, and the rim is surrounded by alternating stylized leaf and flower designs.
