Label Text:
This painting was attributed to Simone Cantarini by Dr. D. Stephen Pepper in 1985. "I have personally examined your painting and I am certain that it is by Simone Cantarini (1612-1648), the most gifted pupil of Guido Reni. I would suggest that it was painted in the 1640s". The attribution to Cantarini was later questioned by Peter C. Sutton and Charles Beddington in 1995. "We... cannot fully support the attribution of your St. Peter to Cantarini, but unfortunately cannot offer an alternative assignment".
