Paulus Potter is best known for his images of animals. In his short career (he died at the age of twenty-nine) he executed eighteen etchings on the subject.

The Neighing Horse is part of a series of five etchings of horses in a landscape. Three of the compositions show horses in the prime of life, while the last two depict overworked and dying animals. Although the landscape elements are minimal, they are an important part of the composition. The dynamically positioned horses are set on elevated ground with a townscape and a body of water in the background. Great attention is paid to the articulation of the horses’ anatomy.
