Description:
Framed map of "MASSACHUSETTS" by Joanna Richmond, which has been partially hand-colored in yellow, blue and red. The map appears to be a school exercise drawing; geography was considered a important subject by contemporary school masters. The map depicts Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Middlesex, Suffolk with Boston, Norfolk, Plymouth, Bristol, Barnstable, Dukes (Martha's Vineyard), and Nantucket counties; Cape Ann, Massachusetts Bay, Cape Cod Bay, and Buzzards Bay; and the Connecticut River (not labeled) runnning through the middle of Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden counties. It also notes the surrounding states: New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut. There are a few Joanna Richmonds born in Massachusetts in the early 19th century in MA - possibly Joanna Richmond of Middleborough, Plymouth County, MA born August 17, 1822 or perhaps Johannah Richmond of Dighton, Bristol County, MA born April 5, 1810.

Label Text:
Schoolmasters considered geography an important subject area. Students, often girls, copied maps from books and atlases as exercises in memorization, penmanship, and drawing. This map depicts the counties of Massachusetts and also notes the surrounding states of New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.
