Description: Framed map of "MASSACHUSETTS" by Joanna Richmond, which has been partially hand-colored in yellow, blue and red. The map appears to be a school exercise drawing; geography was considered a important subject by contemporary school masters. The map depicts Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Middlesex, Suffolk with Boston, Norfolk, Plymouth, Bristol, Barnstable, Dukes (Martha's Vineyard), and Nantucket counties; Cape Ann, Massachusetts Bay, Cape Cod Bay, and Buzzards Bay; and the Connecticut River (not labeled) runnning through the middle of Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden counties. It also notes the surrounding states: New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Connecticut. There are a few Joanna Richmonds born in Massachusetts in the early 19th century in MA - possibly Joanna Richmond of Middleborough, Plymouth County, MA born August 17, 1822 or perhaps Johannah Richmond of Dighton, Bristol County, MA born April 5, 1810.
