Description:
Richard Stuart was born in Winchendon, MA, in March 25, 1780. Stuart married Ruth Bixby, had six children, and died in 1860. Waterville, Massachusetts, is a part of Winchendon. Framed watercolor of a large Neoclassical style house, ell, and barn. There is a smaller separate structure on the lower left hand side; the main house is fenced in and has five bays, and the front door has side lights and columns on either side of the door, there are rock walls in the background, in the foreground on the right are two horses and riders. These images appear to be printed on paper - perhaps newsprint - and cut out and applied to the drawing, the whole is colored in red, blue, black, green, yellow, and brown; the drawing is cut and pasted on a separate piece of backing paper, the lower area of the backing paper reads in ink inscription: "R. Stewart's Mansion" and "Drawn and Painted by ..[cut off]" On the reverse backboard of the drawing is a more modern inscription, it reads: Esther E. Meyer/ Lucy McKay/ Mr. & Mrs. Richard Stuart's Home/ Waterville, Mass." Examining the interior of the drawing - it is pasted onto the reverse of a photograph of a young woman. Condition: the drawing is very toned, there are some losses along the top edge, a crease down the center, and a split in the lower center.
