Label Text:
Throughout her long career, Serebriakova was a figurative artist who combined freshness of perception with a careful study and assimilation of lessons of the Renaissance masters and the Russian portrait painters of the eighteenth century.
Serebriakova began her art studies in 1901 at the art school founded by Princess Maria Tenisheva and directed by Ilya Repin, the foremost Russian realist painter of the late nineteenth century. It was there that Serebriakova received a solid academic foundation of her training.
After emigrating to Paris in 1924, Serebriakova earned a living painting society portraits. The female nude also became Serebriakova’s favorite subject. She continued to paint her children into adulthood, including affectionate studies of her daughters, Tatiana and Ekaterina, who often posed in the nude, as in this portrait.
