Description:
The Madonna in a red dress, blue cloak, white shawl over head and shoulders, sits on a heavy throne, slightly turned to the right where Saint Ambrose kneels in adoration of the Child who is giving the blessing gesture.. Hands clasped before him, he wears a richly embroidered gold cape, a long crozier by his side. He holds a scroll with the inscription "TRA TE ESSE MATREM". Behind him stretches out a velvety green landscape rising to a castle, woods, and high blue mountains. At the extreme left a doorway reveals a courtyard in which two nuns stand conversing before a classical style facade, and further back a nun is on a staircase. Tiny figures of men in armor and two other figures are behind the main figures on a road.
