Label Text:
Both preserved scenes on this wine cup reveal aspects of musical training, a key element in an aristocratic Athenian’s general education. On the cup’s exterior, a youth holding out a lyre sits to the left of a Doric column, a shorthand indication of an indoor or sheltered location. Two young students practice their instruments in front of him: one tunes a lyre and one plays an aulos, a double-reeded wind instrument. Two animal-skin cases for the instruments hang on the wall. Inside the cup is a youth with a lyre, as well as a sponge and scraper—utensils associated with the gymnasium, where both body and mind were trained in ancient Greece.
