Label Text:
The two young musicians portrayed in this painting are Morisot’s daughter Julie playing the violin, and her niece Jeannie Gobillard on the piano. A brilliant yellow light floods through the window behind them, blurring the girls' faces and hands, and making dramatic silhouettes of their bodies. The close relationship between the two cousins is represented by the harmonious music they play together. The scene also demonstrates the artist’s adoration for the two young women through an intimate view of their private rehearsal at home.
Morisot was a key member of the Impressionist circle. As one of the few professional women artists at the time, she attracted favorable reviews from art critics. Painted just one year before her death, this work exemplifies Morisot’s late style. The long brushstrokes seen here differ from her earlier paintings which feature lighter, more airy brushwork.
