Label Text:
The Fair Maid of Gascony, painted some twenty years later than Corot's Jumièges, belongs to a group of paintings Corot created in his studio with posed models, often dressed in antique costumes. These images of women were not portraits or allegories but remain somewhat of a mystery. They were never sold and Corot kept them until his death. The Fair Maid appears in at least two paintings of his studio, as seen at the upper right of the National Gallery of Art’s painting (left). Both Jumièges and the Fair Maid contain a sense of nostalgia for bygone eras.
