This canvas, with its lilac and silvery dashes of paint, belongs to Monet’s famous series of thirty paintings of Rouen Cathedral, located in northwestern France. The artist painted the cathedral on location in two campaigns in the winters of 1892 and 1893, finishing the canvases in his studio in 1894.
Unlike other works in the series, this canvas does not record the great western façade of the gothic cathedral (see illustration). Instead, it depicts the Cour d’Albane (the Albane courtyard) on the northern flank of the edifice. Here, Monet shows the back of the tower of Saint-Romain with other buildings from the town attached and clustered around its base. Almost all the other canvases in the series were painted from rooms Monet rented across from the cathedral, but this was painted on-site.
