Description:
Coin silver spoon with, thin, ovoid shell-shaped bowl with radiating ribs and an irregularly cut rim, rounded shoulders, and upturned tapered undulating fiddle handle with a midrib. The shell is die stamped “J. M. HINDS” in a serrated rectangle and "WEBSTER” in Roman capitals on the back of the handle, and engraved “Shumway" in script on the handle. “Shumway” refers to Charles Lewis Shumway and Achsah Ward who were married November 22, 1860. Although not listed in the standard reference works on silversmiths, a John F. Hinds has a store in the Spaulding block in Webster, MA, in the 1860s and 1870s, where he made and sold silver wares, and which still stands today. John F. Hinds listed as a jeweler and watchmaker in Webster, c. 1840-1880. (retailer mark not a silversmith mark?); Mary Ann Corbin, b. 1822; m. John F. Hinds of Sutton or Webster; no ch.; d. July 16, 1883, at Webster. 71. 1880 Census: John F. Hinds, b. 1821, 59 years old, married to Mary A. Hinds in Webster, MA. (Mary A. Day (her birthplace was Funovad?) had a baby boy Lewis Franklin Hinds in 1886, he died in infancy),With Sarah Foley he has two children, John F. Hinds and Esther L. Hinds. Listed as jeweler and watch dealer. Reference: History of Worcester County, Massachusetts, 2:466, mentions a John F. Hinds who was elected selectman of Webster in 1865, and in 1882, 1883, 1884. John F. Hinds, Massachusetts House of Representatives, from Worcester County, 8th district for Webster, Auburn, Oxford, 1891.(Son of John F. Hinds)
