Label Text: A native of Yokka-ichi, Mie Prefecture, Kinoshita Tomio graduated from the Nagoya Municipal College of Art in 1941. Initially, his work focused on landscapes, using concentric curves and parallel lines to simulate volume, in conscious emulation of the prints of European woodcut masters Albrecht Dürer and Lucas Cranach. In the 1960s, he began to experiment with anthropomorphic forms, adapting his techniques to the depiction of abstracted human faces. While the resulting print may be simple in appearance, the virtuosity with which Kinoshita overlays the natural grain of the wood with his volumetric lines is a truly impressive feat, at once highlighting and subverting the inherent materiality of the woodblock, whose natural texture appears even in the seemingly flat background.
