Boris is crowned in the Cathedral of the Dormition in the Moscow Kremlin, the traditional coronation cathedral of all Russian tsars since Ivan IV's (the Terrible) coronation in 1547. Dobuzhinskii illustrates the moment when Boris steps out on the porch after the ceremony and expresses both his humility and his hope to be a good and just ruler.
