Description:
allegory

Label Text:
A head with closed eyes floats in a haze of clouds and flowers. The woman, whose features have been associated with those of Redon’s wife, seems to sleep. Redon gives visual form to dreams and visions through his expressive use of color, applied in loose brushstrokes that allow the canvas to show through in some spots.

Redon was a leading artist of the Symbolist movement, which moved away from representing nature and the external world to explore the interior realm of the imagination and the unconscious mind. In many ways, this painting illustrates the key tenets of this movement.
