An accomplished book illustrator, poster designer, and etcher, Mignot settled in Paris around 1910. He drew many of his subjects from the theater and artistic circles. Here the unidentified young woman, scarcely wrapped in a light fabric shawl, strikes a confident pose, with a cigarette between her lips, her chin tilted up in defiance. In “polite society,” women smoking in public was still considered daring, but was tolerated in entertainment establishments and among the working classes. Eventually, smoking cigarettes became associated with sophistication and the feminine liberation movement as societal expectations changed.
