Description:
landscape

Label Text:
The luminous, textured, cleanly composed landscapes that Chase produced near Southampton, Long Island, in the years after he founded the Shinnecock Summer School of Art in 1891 mark high points in American Impressionism. Interestingly, Chase’s students, including Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, Georgia O’Keeffe, Charles Sheeler, and Joseph Stella, would work in widely varying styles, indicating a lack of rigidity in his instruction.
