Label Text:
Jonathan Meese is a controversial German artist mostly owing to his frequent reference to dictators, in particular Hitler and Stalin, and the ambivalent statements about his relationship to them. He works in all media, including performance, and frequently uses collage and mixed media. His topics refer to a variety of cultural values, works, and representatives, including the Sphinx. Hence the work Die Sphinx (Dr. Rippchen) in der Wueste (The Sphinx [Dr. Loin Rib] in the Desert) features the typical elements of Meese's art.
