Label Text:
In the wake of the Armory Show, Childe Hassam represented the old guard with his stylistic salute to the French Impressionists, but he was very much aware of his rapidly changing world as well. Executed in his 59th year, "Flags on the Friars Club," 1918, is from the artist's signature series that celebrates the Allied victory of the First World War.

Depicting the flag-draped streets of New York, most of these canvases embody the patriotic fervor and pride of the nation. This painting offers a view of the Friars Club on West 48th Street, just visible beyond the Sixth Avenue elevated train tracks. Founded in 1904, the Friars Club was a private men's club whose members belonged to the entertainment industry. Hassam's street scene captures a quiet interlude and its timeless quality contrasts sharply with the vibrant energy displayed in the artist's other flag paintings.
