Although Davies’s decorative style and Arcadian subject bear little resemblance to the violent realism of Henri’s Salome, both artists shared a radical commitment to Modernism. In 1908, Davies would exhibit with The Eight, the progressive group of figurative painters formed by Henri in opposition to the National Academy of Design; in 1913, Davies would organize the Armory Show, the International Exhibition of Modern Art that introduced European Cubism to a wide American public.
